Safety While Traveling Abroad

Hello fellow adventurers! Planning your first trip abroad? It's essential to prioritize your safety and well-being while exploring new destinations. After reading various comment threads on my social media accounts, I thought I would share important safety precautions that my family follows when traveling overseas.

  1. The U.S. Department of State's website (travel.state.gov) is a great resource for country-specific travel advisories and safety information. Use the website to gather information on the destinations you will visit to familiarize yourself with customs, laws, and potential risks.

  2. Register with the U.S. Embassy by enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This free service allows you to receive important updates about safety conditions in your destination and enables the embassy to assist you in case of an emergency.

  3. Share your itinerary with a trusted family member or friend.

  4. Secure your travel documents. Make copies of your passport, visa, and any other important documents. Keep one set with you and leave another set with someone you trust back home. Save copies to your phone too.

  5. Know the closest embassies to where you will be staying. Make sure you have a copy of the address and contact information. It doesn't hurt to write down additional neighboring country embassies as well.

  6. Stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings. Avoid displaying expensive items, large amounts of cash, etc. Stay in well lit areas and be cautious of pickpockets or scams targeting tourists (like people trying to "gift" you objects like bracelets or necklaces).

  7. Stay connected ensuring you have reliable means of communication while abroad. Check with your cellular provider for international coverage or perhaps purchase a SIM card for your travel destination.

  8. Research any necessary vaccinations for your destinations. It's important to note that vaccination requirements may vary depending on the destination, the duration of your stay, and your personal health history. It's recommended to consult with a healthcare professional or travel medicine specialist for personalized advice. This CDC website is a helpful resource:

Remember, these precautions are not meant to discourage anyone from seeing the world. By being prepared and informed, you can feel more confident while traveling abroad.

Additional tips to consider when traveling with children:

1) When registering your trip with STEP, you will receive notifications on any advisories while in country. I've received notifications warning me to stay away from certain areas given protests and large crowds. Listen to those advisories.

2) If your child has medical conditions, make sure you have access to their records in case you need them.

3) On the state.gov website, make sure you research how to dial for medical and non-medical emergencies. I make a spreadsheet of the local "911" or other emergency numbers to have on hand should anyone get sick, hurt, or need help. Teach your children how to dial these numbers.

4) Purchase comprehensive travel insurance and…
