Embracing Spontaneity: Niagara Falls

Valuable Lessons: Life has a way of teaching us lessons through the most unexpected circumstances. My high school friend, who had an insatiable love for travel and a contagious zest for life, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. We were all shook. Her unwavering spirit and passion inspired me to break free from the monotony of everyday life. So when I woke up one Thursday morning wondering what Niagara Falls looked like in person, I convinced my husband we should leave after work and take a long weekend with our children.

Rediscovering the Joy of Spontaneity: In a world consumed by routines and schedules, spontaneity often takes a backseat. However, my friend's battle with cancer reminded me of the importance to seize every moment and live life to the fullest. With this renewed perspective, I wanted to ensure my children learned the value of being spontaneous. Leaving our home, I remember hearing my friend's favorite song on the radio and texting with her about our adventure. This would prove to be our last text exchange.

The Drive is Half the Adventure: Some readers are probably wondering how can a 12 hour drive one-way with children on a whim be fun and after an 8 hour day of work? Well, you have to be flexible and not expect perfection. Spending that amount of time driving through country roads and highways gave us time to enjoy family conversations. When you are isolated away from life's distractions, you can focus your time really listening to one another and enjoying each person's uniqueness. We found a hotel in Pennsylvania stopping once we were too tired. The next morning, we drove into New York and decided to continue embracing the unplanned. We had heard about the Anchor Bar in Buffalo and decided we had to stop for lunch before crossing the border. For those not familiar, this is said to be the birthplace of the national football fan treasure: the hot wing. Definitely delicious and worth the stop in our opinion, but we do love a little spice.

The Magic of Niagara Falls: As we finally arrived, the sheer magnitude and power of the cascading waterfalls left us speechless. We wasted no time in securing spots on a ferry tour. Donning our ponchos, we eagerly boarded the boat, ready to get up close and personal with the mighty falls. The mist enveloped us as we sailed towards Horseshoe Falls, feeling the power of nature in every drop. Witnessing the experience through the eyes of my children reminded me of the joy my friend found in exploring new places and sharing those experiences with others.

Ziplining Before the Return: Seeking an adrenaline rush, we decided to take our adventure to new heights - quite literally. We signed up for a ziplining experience soaring above Niagara Gorge, right next to the falls. As we harnessed up and prepared for the ride, a mix of excitement and nervousness filled the air. With a leap of faith, we launched ourselves off the platform, zooming through the air. The rush of wind in our faces and the views of the falls created an unforgettable experience together. In hindsight, ziplining represented the spirit of our trip. It taught us to step outside our comfort zones, find the joy in the journey, overcome and face our fears, and embrace the unknown as it can lead to incredible adventures and personal growth.

Cherishing the Moments: Throughout our spontaneous weekend visit, I couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the time spent with my children and the memories we were creating together. This trip served as a poignant lesson in remembering to be fluid and appreciate the unexpected. From the laughter-filled car rides to the spectacular views, each experience was a testament to the power of living in the present. As we bid farewell to Niagara Falls, I carried with me a renewed sense of adventure and a determination to live life to the fullest, just as my friend had done.
